The Sun salutation (Soorya Namaskar)

This exercise is a series of yoga asanas (postures) and rythmic breathing that improves breathing and circulation.It is a warm-up exercise that makes the spine, arms and legs flexible and reduces abdominal fat.It consists of twelve spinal positions.

The greeting of the sun is traditionally performed in the early morning facing the sun.The sun is considered to be the source of health and vitality.In the hindu religion, Surya deva, the sun personified is believed to bestow health and long life.

Even though, facing the morning sun is not an absolute rule, however, it is advisable to indulge in it as often as we can afford to. Afterall,sunlight provides us with vitamin D which helps the body absorb calcium which form and maintain healthy bones, regulates body levels of calcium and phosphorus and promotes mineralization of bones. According to research carried out at the University of BostonVitamin D is important in the prevention of cancers, type 1 diabetes, heart disease, and osteoporosis.

Greeting of the sun is recommended for people who have just started practising yoga.It will give them considerable flexibility and prepare them for the more difficult postures.It could be done as the main exercise on days you cannot make time for the other postures.You will actually feel a tingly sensation from your neck down to your perineum during the exercise session.So go get your yoga mat!

*Sun salutation should be repeated at least twelve times

*Perform exercise on a flat surface.

*Yoga exercises are not to be rushed,progress is made over time.

*If you have a meal, allow an hour and half before commencing exercises.
